The
results of the EUVE survey of the entire sky, conducted by the scanning
telescopes, are typically displayed in a variety of ways or projections.
On the left hand column, we see the familiar map of the Earth displayed
in three projections (Spherical, Cartesian, and Hammer-Aitoff). The advantage
of using Cartesian or Hammer-Aitoff projections over Spherical is that
we can see the whole Earth at once. Similarly, the whole sky observed by
the EUVE satellite can be displayed in a variety of projections, as seen
on the right hand column. Astronomers typically use the Hammer-Aitoff projection,
which displays the whole sky at once. |
