Description:
"Electromagnetic Radiation" unit presents us with a variety of opportunities
to include this material in the most natural way. This topic not only enables
us to discuss common and specific properties of each type of radiation,
but also gives us a chance to include additional information about astronomical
objects that generate them. This unit can serve as guiding structure for
the exploration of other science topics: optics and ecology, nuclear physics
and telecommunications, structure of the universe and photo-electricity,
etc.
This lesson plan features group research work, a poster contest, a science
conference, quipu making, an electronic
bulletin board and putting electromagnetic
radiation on trial!
Objectives
-
to introduce general properties of all electromagnetic waves,
-
to describe astronomical and artificial sources of electromagnetic radiation,
-
to identify the position of each type of radiation in the electromagnetic
spectrum according to its wavelength and frequency,
-
to discuss methods used to detect and analyze different waves,
-
to analyze the relation between the specific properties of waves, and their
position in the electromagnetic spectrum,
-
to highlight the idea of how knowledge about radiation helps scientists
solve the mystery of the evolution of the Universe,
-
to develop in students strong interest in astrophysics.
