Change
Tilt Screen
This screen is accessed by clicking on the Change Tilt navigation
button and permits students to change the tilt of the Earth's
axis. By clicking on the blue semicircle above the Earth,
your students can change the tilt from +90¼ (Northern Hemisphere
tilted away from the Sun in January) to -90¼ (Northern Hemisphere
tilted toward the Sun in January). The tilt is numerically
displayed below the
chart. Earth's normal tilt of 23.5¼, "Earth Normal," can
be set by clicking on the button below the tilt angle.
Click
on the oval-shaped button at the center-left of the screen
to return to the Main Screen and see the new seasons that
result from the changed axis tilt.
Change Orbit Shape Screen
The Change Shape Screen permits your students to
change the shape of the Earth's orbit. The "Earth Normal"
orbit is nearly circular, having an eccentricity of approximately
0.02. Your students can make the orbit perfectly circular
or stretch the orbit by increments of 0.05 into a noticeably
elliptical orbit (eccentricity of 0.50).
Click on the oval-shaped button at left to return to the
Main Screen and observe the changes in seasons caused by
the new orbit shape.
