Unwrap the comet as soon as it is frozen sufficiently to hold its' shape. It's OK if it isn't round and smooth - real comets aren't smooth either!

The first close pictures of a comet nucleus were taken in 1986 by the Giotto spacecraft. The cameras showed the nucleus was odd shaped and lumpy, instead of smooth and "homogeneous."
