Satellite Dataflow Demonstration

This is a hands-on demonstration of the communication path between the EUVE satellite and a scientist on Earth. The purpose of this lesson plan is to illustrate, through a simulation activity, the communications path between a scientist and the EUVE (Extreme UltraViolet Explorer) Satellite, showing how the data are sent and received. This demonstration also allows students to get a feel for the dynamic of satellite communications and orbital motion around the Earth.

1. Students will be able to diagram the communications path between the EUVE satellite and scientists at UC Berkeley's Center for EUV Astrophysics.

Student Activities
This is a hands-on demonstration of the communications path between scientists and NASA's Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) Satellite, showing how scientific data are downloaded from the satellite. The same demonstration can also be used to illustrate how the instruments on the satellite are commanded by scientists on Earth. It gives students a feel for the dynamics of satellite communications and orbital motion around the Earth.

Student Prerequisites
Solid group work skills and undertanding of the difference between rotation and revolution.

Assessment
Given a diagram illustrating the various sites and communications satellites, students should be able to trace correctly the dataflow pathway from a designated star.

Time Requirements
30-45 minutes prep , 30-45 minutes instruction, and 1 or 2 hours for student activity.

Materials Required
-One 6" or 8" ball (slightly deflated)
-Ability to print images downloaded from the web.
-Signs (printed from the lesson pages) with yarn, string or ribbon for wearing
-Tennis ball (optional)
-Flat area large enough for the demo (20' x 20' at least)
