An
artist's rendition of our Sun's neighborhood. With the help of the EUVE
satellite, astronomers have been able to form a picture of the Sun's stellar
and interstellar environment. The Sun, along with several other nearby
stars, is located within a region of of hot, low density gas about 300
hundred light years in extent. The interstellar gas is inhomogeneously
distributed around our local neighborhood and our Galaxy. This patchy distribution
has allowed the detection by the EUVE satellite of other galaxies beyond
our own Milky Way. |
