Archive 2006 Dec 6, 2006 Upcoming NASA/NSTA web seminar on Solar Activity and Space Weather. See Upcoming Events for more information. Dec 4, 2006 STEREO will be featured on Discovery HD. Refer to Upcoming Events for more details. Nov 29, 2006 An article from BBC News about newly captured images of the sun's surface - "Probe's close-up of Sun eruption" - in the Articles section. Nov 17, 2006 P2 burns on STEREO A & B were both very successful. The instruments were turned off for an eclipse at perigee (about 25 minutes). Both spacecraft came out of eclipse without any problems. All the instruments were turned back on without problems. The A2 burn & P2 burn look so good on spacecraft A that the spacecraft will not need to do any more burns. It is now on a trajectory to get to lunar swingby and its 22 degree drift orbit. The spacecraft B has two lunar swingbys, so it is much more sensitive to errors. The mission may have to do one more burn on spacecraft B closer to the lunar encounters. Nov 13, 2006 A brief article from Popular Science about STEREO - "A 3-D Look at the Sun's Eruptions" - in the Articles section. Nov 7 , 2006 This is STEREO’s second week in Earth orbit(s). The execution of the apogee propulsive maneuvers on both spacecraft successfully raised their perigees to altitudes that are comfortably above the atmosphere. Currently, both observatories are operating nominally. All subsystems and instruments on both observatories have a GREEN health status. The Delta II 3rd stage reentered the atmosphere on Sunday evening 7:48 pm at a point 600 miles east – north-east of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Those interested in tracking STEREO through their early orbits can get information at the Advanced Plasma Laboratory orbit website. . Nov 1 , 2006 The IMPACT booms successfully deployed today. They are now stretching out into space from the spacecraft body (bus). They hold IMPACT instruments far from the spacecraft's electrical and magnetic contamination. Congratulations to the boom team: Robert Ullrich, Jeremy McCauley and Paul Turin! Oct 31, 2006 Here is a continued update from the launch activities: Launch was near perfect so there is plenty of fuel for an extended mission. STEREO WAVES (S/WAVES) powered up and antennas were deployed. Everything is running smoothly with SWAVES and the instruments have observed the first solar burst (a commonplace type III from flare). The satellites will turn on their "thrusters" at apogee (highest point in their orbit) today to change orbits. The SECCHI doors opened a tiny bit successfully. The heaters have been turned on and were detected by SWAVES and MAG. Oct 29, 2006 The IMPACT instruments: Magnetometer (MAG), Suprathermal Electron (STE), and Solar Wind Electron Analyzer (SWEA) on both STEREO spacecraft were successfully powered up. Oct 26, 2006 The STEREO satellites are healthy, tracking stars, and communicating with Earth. Instrument tests start Oct. 27th. Oct 25, 2006 STEREO successfully launched today at 8:52pm EDT! STEREO was launched into an almost perfect Florida night sky last night and successfully went into its elliptical transfer orbit. Spacecraft were separated and solar panels deployed within approximately a half hour of launch. You can read more about it on the NASA STEREO webpage. Oct 24, 2006 Many articles about STEREO came out in anticipation of the launch. Co-Investigator, Dr. Janet Luhmann, was part of the press interview panel at the STEREO launch facilities. Furthermore, KTVU's 10 O'Clock News ran a snippet on STEREO. Watch Laura Peticolas and Janet Luhmann appear on TV! Aug 25, 2006 An article from the Baltimore Sun about STEREO in the Articles section. Aug 19, 2006 Science News has a cover story about models of the Sun's magnetic field and the STEREO mission. Aug 20, 2006 An article from Astrobiology Magazine about STEREO in the Articles section. July 19, 2006 An article from Physics Web about STEREO in the Articles section. July 18, 2006 Two articles about STEREO from The Guardian and The Times of London are now available. July 17, 2006 Two new articles added. The first article is from The Register and the second article is a press release from Eurek Alert. April 10, 2006 A new article from Knoxnews about STEREO in the Articles section. April 3, 2006 New links added to our Sonification of Other Planets page. March 10, 2006 NASA aids in resolving long standing solar cycle mystery - The Sun's 11 year sunspot cycle is a cycle that varies from a dynamic and active Sun, throwing off large quantities of mass and x-rays as solar storms, to a quiet Sun with very few solar storms. To read the full press release article, please visit the NASA press release webpage. March 8, 2006 Take a survey about SEGway’s Exploring Magnetism lesson guides:
