Virtual Tour: FAST Operations

  • The satellite dish pictured here is from a Transportable Orbital Tracking Station (TOTS) such as the one which recieves transmissions in Alaska or at the NASA Wallops Flight Facility.
  • Once the snapshots reach Wallops Island, they are sent to the Packet Processing Center at Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. The snapshots are sorted by type and ordered in time. Any duplicates or untrustworthy packets are removed; the rest are sent to the SOC in Berkeley.
  • When these data packets arrive at the SOC, the snapshots are cut into CD-Rom format and posted on the web for scientists and researchers to use.
