It is our great pleasure to invite you, your family and other companions to our free event “THE ASTRONOMY OF THE MAYA- Honoring the Maya in the International Year of Astronomy” on Saturday, October l0, 2009, from 2:30 to 11:00 PM at the Pickleweed Community Center, San Rafael, CA.
Casa De La Cultura Maya, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and UC Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory are working in partnership to create bridges between the indigenous knowledge of the Maya and contemporary astronomy with inquiry based science learning opportunities for youth and families. “THE ASTRONOMY OF THE MAYA” will provide the opportunity to learn astronomy within the full richness of Mayan cultural roots through public talks by experts from Yucatán and NASA, day and night telescope viewing, fun educational workshops and activities for families, professional dance performances and an evening social dance, traditional food, engaging exhibits (including traditional Maya textiles, a back strap loom demonstration, Maya art, and Late Classic Period reproductions), raffles for museum tickets and take-home activities, and much more (see flyer below).
