For this activity, you will need three syringes. One should be filled with water, one with air and one with sand. Press down on each syringe. What do you observe?

The drawings above show three syringes – filled with air, water and sand. In your journal, record how far you were able to push the plunger for each syringe. Then talk with your classmates about possible reasons for what you have observed. Do you all agree? Be sure to write down your explanations in your journal.
