When we think of observatories we usually think of large telescopes on mountain tops. Places where astronomers gather to map and measure the sky. Basic naked eye observing can be done from any place with a dark sky and reasonably clear horizon. It requires little in the way of equipment, and so true observatories (places where sky watching specialists monitored the sky) can be very difficult to identify.
