Flying in airplanes, scientists were offered
an even better view of the planet. Now, they could see a small
area below them but travel around more easily than in a balloon
and discover how everything fit together.
The first powered airplane
flight took place in a plane now called the Kitty Hawk, but was
originally called Flyer I by its inventors, American brothers
Wilbur and Orville Wright. The plane took off at Kill Devil
Hills, North Carolina on December 17, 1903.
