    1. What is the magnetosphere?  Explain  how it comes about.

 The magnetosphere is the bubble of magnetic field surrounding and 

arising from the earth.  Its shape is actually a teardrop, with a long

 magnetotail  pointing anti-sunward.  The shape comes from the  

pressure of the solar magnetic field that flows constantly past, carried by

the solar wind.
