M51 (NGC 5194) is classified as a type "Sc"
spiral galaxy. Notice that the arms of this galaxy swirl in toward the center. This famous
Whirlpool galaxy M51 in the constellation Canes Venaciti was one of Messier's original
discoveries. He discovered it on October 13, 1773, when observing a comet.
