Help with using RealMedia and QuickTime

If the RealMedia interviews or QuickTime movie won't display on your computer, you may need to install a free shareware "plug-in" application to play them. Most program installation files you will need are available directly from the "download" links on this page.

If you already know which application you want, you can GO straight to RealMedia and QuickTime download links.

Plug-in Requirements

In some cases, which version of a plug-in application you should install may depend on the type of computer and browser you're using:

Mac PowerPC vs. 68040: If you have a Macintosh computer, you should know whether you have a PowerPC processor or an earlier 68k or 680x0 processor. Most PowerPC computers, including iMacs and Gx's, have the words "PowerPC" somewhere on the outside of the housing. If you don't see this on your computer, use the software versions labeled 68k with a * in the tables below.

OS 7/8: Any Macintosh less than about 6 years old should be running the Mac operating system version 7.X or 8.X , needed to support the browsers and plug-ins. A browser with standard plugins should have all you need for the lesson.

Windows: PC computers with Pentium processor 100MHz or higher are all ok; that's almost all of them. If you are using Windows95/98, Windows2000, or WindowsNT, you should be able to use all the features of the lesson.

Browsers

You may need to install a new version of a browser program if your browser does not support frames, or if it is not Java enabled.  Most other problems do not require a new browser.   If the Java applet doesn't load, be sure to check your browser options menu to make sure Java is enabled, or "turned on."  If you need to install a new browser, please do this first, before any other fixes. If you don't know whether to get a new browser, read on...

You may already have an adequate browser for using RealMedia and QuickTime; please check the listing below. If you have the browser type and version specified, then you can proceed to downloading the RealPlayer or QuickTime  plug-ins. You're OK if you are running:

Macintosh computers with OS 7 or 8

  • Netscape version 3.04 or higher
  • Internet Explorer version 4.0 or higher

PC with Windows 95, 98, 2000 or NT operating system

  • Netscape version 3.04 or higher
  • Internet Explorer version 4.0 or higher

To load a new browser:

  • Find the table below for the type of computer you have: Macintosh or PC/Windows.
  • Select the entry for the browser you want: Netscape Communicator or Internet Explorer
  • Mac Users only: determine the browser for your computer type: PowerPC (newer, including Gx) or 680x0 (older). See Plug-in Requirements if you are not sure which version is appropriate for your computer.
  • Download your browser installation file using the link. Use only the "download now" or "next" links.
  • You may need to fill in a form with your operating system, processor and connection type. This information from a technician if you are unsure.
  • After downloading, start the installation by going to the folder or directory on your computer where you placed the installation file, and double-clicking the file icon. Then follow any directions that appear on the screen.
  • Reload the Sunspots lesson in the new browser, return to this page, and continue with downloading any plug-in applications you need.

Playing QuickTime Movies:

To view the movie of the Sun in visible light and x-rays, you will need a QuickTime plug-in player. Follow these steps to load the QuickTime player. On slower connections, like a 14.4 Kbps modem, it will take quite a while to load, and you should consider loading it into the player well ahead of time.

To Load the QuickTime Player:

  • Find the table below for the kind of computer you have: Macintosh or Windows.

  • Click on the QuickTime 4.1 & "download now" links. Fill out the download form, clicking the radio button for the type of computer you have: Macintosh or Windows.

  • Start QuickTime player installation by double-clicking the appropriate file icon.

  • Note:  version 4.1 for Mac requires OS 7.5. If your system has an earlier version of the OS, consult your technician to upgrade the system or find an alternate plug-in.
