Any of the small, rocky bodies which orbit the Sun,  mostly between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.  A few asteroids have long ellipse-shaped orbits,  but none lie far outside the solar system.  The asteroid shown here is one of the 10 largest in the solar system. It is called Eros.
